Summary

The 'Super Ballon d'Or' is one of the rarest and most prestigious individual awards in football history. Unlike the annual Ballon d'Or, this special award has been given only once, in 1989, by France Football to commemorate the magazine's 30th anniversary.

This unique trophy was presented to the most outstanding European player to have graced the game over the past three decades. The voting was conducted by past Ballon d'Or winners and the France Football jury. The legendary Real Madrid player, Alfredo Di Stéfano, won the award, triumphing over other football giants like Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini.

Di Stéfano was recognized for his monumental legacy, which included leading Real Madrid to five consecutive European Cup (now Champions League) titles. The Super Ballon d'Or symbolizes more than just a personal accolade; it is a tribute to a player's unparalleled legacy in a specific era. Over 30 years have passed, and no second Super Ballon d'Or has been awarded. Many football fans speculate that Lionel Messi is the most likely candidate to one day receive this honor.

Alfredo Di Stéfano was an Argentine and naturalised Spanish professional footballer and manager who played as a forward, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Nicknamed \"Saeta Rubia\" (\"Blond Arrow\"), he is best known for his achievements with Real Madrid, where he was instrumental in the club's domination of the European Cup and La Liga during the 1950s and 1960s. Along with Francisco Gento and José María Zárraga, he was one of only three players to play a part in all five European Cup victories, scoring goals in each of the five finals. Di Stéfano played international football mostly for Spain after moving to Madrid and becoming a naturalised citizen, but he also played for Argentina and Colombia.
